Gross Up Nearly 40% as Goffs November Foal Sale Ends

The Goffs November foal sale ended its four-day run in Ireland Friday with major increases from a year ago. The 672 weanlings sold grossed 14,683,700 euros ($17,495,624) and averaged 21,851 euros ($26,035). Compared to 2002's results, the gross increased 39.8% from the 10,503,000 euros collected for the 613 horses sold and the average grew 27.5% from 17,133 euros. The median rose 15.0%, from 10,000 euros last year to 11,500 euros ($13,702) this year.

This year's buy-back rate was 19.6%, with 164 of the 836 weanlings offered failing to find new homes. The rate in 2002 was 29.0%.

The top price of the auction was the 330,000 euros ($393,195) brought by a filly from the first crop of Galileo. Tammy Twomey purchased her from Tinnakill House. The filly's dam, the Darshaan mare Continuous, was stakes-placed. Continuous is a half-sister to Derby Italiano-Trofeo Mercedes Benz (Ity-I) winner In a Tiff (by Caerleon) and to group II winners Perfect Imposter and Pennine Walk (both by Persian Bold).
