The Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championships (MATCH) series and The Jockeys' Guild have announced that a $10,000 bonus will be awarded to the jockey with the most points in the series this year.
Points will be awarded based on a horse's finish in each race: 10 points for first, eight for second, six for third, four for fourth, two for fifth, and one for sixth. Harry Vega currently heads the list with 24 points.
"This will be a spirited competition that will no doubt spark further interest in the series," said Alan Foreman, chief executive officer of the Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and creator of MATCH.
MATCH, in its fifth season, consists of 30 races in five divisions. Points are earned by each horse based upon order of finish. Purses for stakes in the series total $3 million, and owners and trainers compete for $510,000 in bonuses.
