Keeneland has cataloged 1,917 horses and stallion shares for its 2004 January horses of all ages sale. The auction will run for five days in Lexington, starting on Monday, Jan. 12, and continuing through Friday, Jan. 16. In 2003, 1,907 lots were cataloged for the sale, which also lasted five days.
The 2004 total consists of 827 broodmares, 191 broodmare prospects, 634 yearlings, 152 racing or broodmare prospects, six racing or stallion prospects, 81 racing prospects, 21 stallion prospects, three stallions, and two stallion shares.
"We've had a tremendous year in 2003. It surpassed our expectations," said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's director of sales. "The yearling and weanling markets were especially strong, so we're hopeful that the momentum will continue into our January sale."
Edmund Gann's multi-millionaire You is cataloged for the sale as a broodmare prospect and is consigned by Mill Ridge Sales. You won five grade I stakes in her career -- the Acorn, the Frizette, the Santa Anita Oaks, the Test, and the Las Virgenes. In 23 career starts, the 4-year-old daughter of You and I earned four other wins, eight seconds, and two thirds.
"You is a wonderful horse and we're very fortunate Mr. Gann is selling her at Keeneland," Russell said.
Sires represented by broodmares in foal or yearlings include A.P. Indy, Cozzene, Deputy Minister, Dynaformer, Elusive Quality, Fusaichi Pegasus, Giant's Causeway, Gone West, Lemon Drop Kid, Storm Cat, Theatrical, Unbridled's Song and War Chant. Stallions whose first foals arrived in 2003 that are represented in the sale include Aptitude, Broken Vow, El Corredor, Forest Camp, Point Given and Tiznow.
At the 2003 January auction, gross sales totaled $31,186,000 for 1,185 horses. The average price was $26,317.
