Boreal rallied to the lead with a quarter-mile to run and held on for a 1 1/2-length win in Sunday's BMW Deutsches Derby (Ger-I) at Hamburg. Borgia, Boreal's half-sister, won the German Derby in 1997.
German-bred Boreal (Java Gold -- Britannia, by Tarim) had never previously won a stakes race in three attempts since earning his maiden win in March. The 3-year-old, however, has never finished worse then third, in four previous starts, including a third-place finish in the 166 Oppenheim -- Union -- Rennen (Ger-II).
Boreal is trained by Peter Schiergen for owner Gestuet Ammerland and was ridden to victory by John Reid. Lierac finished second in the 1 1/2-mile race, three-quarter lengths ahead of Near Honor. Goethe finished fourth in the 18-horse field. The winner stopped the timer in 2:37.09 after completing the distance on soft turf.
