Swept Away won her second career graded stakes race and her second Safely Kept Stakes win of the year, cruising to a 2 1/2-length win at the 3-5 favorite in the $100,000 Safely Kept Stakes (gr. III) Saturday at Laurel Park. In August, the Bernard Flint-trained 3-year-old filly won Arlington International's Safely Kept Stakes by 2 3/4 lengths. Swept Away stopped the timer in 1:09.51 under a hand ride from jockey Jeremy Beasley, as Another finished second in the eight-horse field. Cat Cay finished third, followed by Classic Olympio, March Magic, Summertime Miss, Sumthintotalkabout, and Dr Margaret.
As Another and Sumthintotalkabout battled for the early lead, Swept Away kept right with them while three-wide, raced to the lead on the turn, and burst clear in the stretch under confident handling from Beasley. The win is her second consecutive victory and sixth of the year from 10 starts. In July, Swept Away (Mystery Storm--Queen Ambra, by Alhambra) earned her first graded stakes win in the Azalea Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III) at Calder Race Course. Her other stakes wins on the year include last month's Stormy Blues Breeders' Cup Handicap, Arlington Park's Safely Kept Stakes, the Jeano Stakes, and the Old Hat Stakes. Added to her two wins from two starts as a juvenile, Saturday's Safely Kept win brings her career mark to eight wins in 12 races. She was bred in Florida by Hart Farm and earned $60,000 for owners by Richard, Bertram, and Elaine Klein.
The heavy favorite returned $3.20, $2.40 and $2.20. Another paid $4.80 and $3.20 and completed 1 $19.60 exacta. Cat Cay, who finished third for her third consecutive race, paid $3 to show. (Chart,
