Grundlefoot earned his first career stakes win by upsetting 7-10 favorite Snuck In and Withers Stakes (gr. III) winner Big E E in the $200,900 Leonard Richards Stakes Sunday at Delaware Park. With Travis Dunkelberger in the irons, Grundlefoot made a wide closing move to complete the 1 1/16-mile race in 1:44.04 over a fast track.
Snuck In came in at the break, knocking Grundlefoot into Lightning Paces. Snuck In and Lightning Paces rushed up to challenge for the early lead with Grundlefoot content to wait near the back of the pack. Snuck In gained a slim lead from Lightning Paces after a half run in :46.99, with Big E E stalking the pace in third. Lightning Paces reclaimed the lead after six furlongs run in 1:11.42. As the pace slowed with the leaders running the next quarter in :26.19 seconds, Grundlefoot made up eight lengths while wide to challenge for the lead with a sixteenth to run. Grundlefoot then surged to a 1 3/4-length win over Perfect Cat.
Mercaldo finished a neck farther back in third. Snuck In held for fourth, followed by Pickupspeed, Big E E, Lightning Paces, and Painted Pistol.
As the third wagering choice, 3-year-old Grundlefoot paid $12.40, $5.60, and $6. The winning exacta combination returned $63.80.
Grundlefoot (Unaccounted For--Melancholy Blues, by Cure the Blues) earned $120,000 for owner Paul Fowler Jr. with the win, his fourth in 11 starts. He finished second in both the Federico Tesio Stakes and the Sir Barton Stakes, and third in the Laurel Futurity (gr. III). He is trained by Gary Capuano and was bred in Kentucky by D.W. Frazier.
