Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wygod's Tranquility Lake may head back to the turf for a repeat attempt in Saturday's Palomar Handicap (gr. IIT) at Del Mar. Last year, she won the race by 2 1/2 lengths over Tout Charmant.
The 6-year-old mare worked five furlongs on the track's turf course in :59.72 Sunday under Eddie Delahoussaye and trainer Julio Canani will wait to see how she comes out of the work before he decides on a start in the Palomar.
Del Mar clocker John Fontaine timed Tranquility Lake's work in splits of :24.05 and :48.33.
In her last start, Tranquility Lake won the Clement L. Hirsch Handicap (gr. II) on Del Mar's main track. Tranquility Lake earned her maiden win on the main track at Hollywood Park, but has had most of her success on turf courses, where she is a multiple grade I winner. Her main goal remains a distaff race on the Breeders' Cup card – either the main-track Distaff or Filly and Mare Turf. Last year, she finished eighth in the Filly and Mare Turf.
Others expected for the 1 1/16-mile Palomar are High Walden, Alex Solis to ride; Minor Details, Victor Espinoza; Paga, Mike Smith; and Tout Charmant, no rider named. High Margin, La Ronge, Eurolink Raindance, Bucarest, and Nuit de Siam remain on he fence.
