Nominations for the 11th Turf Festival at Hollywood Park in late November are up 25% from last year, officials said Tuesday. Six races worth about $2.1 million will be held Nov. 23-25 at the Inglewood, Calif., track.
Racing secretary Martin Panza said a near-record 546 nominations were received for the stakes. Panza said about 60 of the nominations are from Europe, and about 90 from the East Coast.
The Nov. 23 program will feature the grade III, $200,000 Hollywood Turf Express Stakes, and the grade III, $200,000 Miesque Stakes. The Nov. 24 card will feature the grade II, $500,000 Citation Handicap, and the grade III, $200,000 Generous Stakes. The festival wraps up Nov. 25 with the grade I, $500,000 Hollywood Derby, and the grade I, $500,000 Matriarch Handicap.
Among the nominees are Secretariat Stakes winner Startac (the Hollywood Derby), and Beverly D Stakes winner England's Legend (the Matriarch).
