Son of South African Champ Tops Keeneland Session

A weanling colt by Horse Chestnut sold for a top price of $85,000 during Wednesday's next-to-last session of the November Breeding Stock Sale at Keeneland.

M P K Ltd. bought the bay colt out of Dr. Redoutable from F. Gill Aulick's Cedar Point Farm, agent for J. Phillip Mote. Horse Chestnut was Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old in his native South Africa. His first foals are 2-year-olds this year.

Keeneland sold 237 horses Wednesday for $2,120,500, an average of $8,947 and a median of $4,500. During the comparable session last year, 170 horses brought $1,320,300, an average of $7,766 and a median of $5,000.

With one day remaining in the 11-day auction, 2,423 horses have been sold for $234,808,300, an average of $96,908 and a median of $35,000. During the 10-day sale last year, 2,377 horses brought $187,230,000, an average of $78,767 and a median of $28,000.

The sale concludes Thursday.
