Senure is yet another in a long line of homebreds sent on to the Breeders' Cup by Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms. With 28 starters, Juddmonte ranks first among breeders of Cup starters since the championship day races began in 1984. Juddmonte is 12th on the all-time leading Breeders' Cup list of leading breeders by earnings, with $2,188,400. Despite those lofty numbers, however, the Breeders' Cup winner's circle has been elusive for Juddmonte, as the farm's best efforts have been two second-place finishes and five thirds.
Senure could change that, however. Based on the success of his sire, Nureyev, and female family, the colt is ideally suited to the turf. Nureyev, a 24-year-old son of Northern Dancer, is among the all-time leading sires of stakes winners, with 128 to his credit. Nureyev is also among the leading general sires in North America this year, with his 13 stakes winners tying Kingmambo for tops in that category. Senure's chance for success in the Turf is further enhanced by Nureyev's Breeders' Cup record. With four Breeders' Cup championship day wins to his credit, Nureyev is tied with Kris S. for second, one behind leader Danzig. Two of Nureyev's Cup wins were the back-to-back victories by the top mare Miesque in the Mile in 1987-'88. That same year, Nureyev's son (and now top turf sire) Theatrical was victorious in the Turf. Spinning World, winner of the 1997 Mile in his second try, provided Nureyev with the fourth victory by one of his offspring in the Cup.
Diese, the dam of Senure, was a group III winner on grass in France and is a daughter of Diesis, who has also been represented by top turf runners. Second dam Monroe, a daughter of Sir Ivor, was also a group III winner and group I-placed in Ireland. In addition to Diese, Monroe produced European champion Xaar, group III winner Mastercclass, and North American stakes winner Ile de Jinsky. In addition, daughters of Monroe have produced stakes winners Didina, Espionage, and Zante.
