Veterans' Day Card Opens Hollywood Meet
Bobby Frankel, the nation's leading trainer with a North American record $17.8 million in purses, will saddle two horses in the $70,000 Bien Bien Stakes Tuesday when Hollywood Park opens its 23rd Autumn Meet with a special Veterans' Day card.Hollywood Park will be dark Wednesday but resumes live racing on Thursday.Frankel, who sent out Mizzen Mast to win the inaugural running of the one-mile turf race for 3-year-olds, will be represented by Royal Price and Special Rate in Tuesday's seven-horse field. Royal Price, a German-bred owned by Michael Bello, broke his maiden while making his lone North American start at one mile on turf Oct. 19 at Santa Anita Park. Group-placed on two occasions, he finished in the money in five of eight starts in Germany before coming to the Frankel stable.Gentlemen's Club, a son of 1997 Hollywood Gold Cup winner Gentlemen, is out of the mare Fire The Groom, who won the Wilshire Handicap at Hollywood Park and Arlington Park's prestigious Beverly D. in 1991 while conditioned by the late Bill Shoemaker.Trained by Richard Mandella for R.D. Hubbard and Connie Sczesny, Gentlemen's Club has won two of four starts, including his lone race on turf. He will be running a mile for the first time in the Bien Bien.High Descent, trained by Eoin Harty for Darley Stud, is 2-for-9 lifetime, both wins coming during the summer at Arlington Park.
