Sixty-one of the 63 in-foal catalogued mares sold without reserves, and each were part of a package that included a no-guarantee season to a selected Adena Springs stallion for 2004. While the 2003 sale rebounded from last year's all-time low it again failed to reach numbers set in previous year. This year grossed $1,364,900 with an average price of $22,375. The median price was $13,000. Last year 58 mares sold grossed $1,079,400 for an average of $18,610. The median price was $10,000. "I think the sale went OK," said Dan Hall, farm manager for Frank Stronach's Adena Springs Kentucky near Midway, Ky. "We've had a lot of stakes winners come out of dams sold at this sale. The buyers have done well and we tend to get repeat business."Topping the 2003 sale was the grade II winning Distinctive Pro mare, Distinct Habit. The 13-year-old mare brought a top price of $80,000 from Sergio DeSouso's Discovery Bloodstock. Distinct Habit, produced from the Habitat mare Terracotta Hut, sold in foal to Touch Gold and with a 2004 season to Milwaukee Brew. The mare is the dam of seven foals, including stakes winner Mr. Routine (by Mt. Livermore)."She has already produced a stakes winner and is in foal to a stallion that I like," DeSouso said of his purchase. "There is very good value to this sale and a it's a good place to take a chance on a mare."Discovery Bloodstock purchased three mares during the sale for a total price of $139,000.The second highest price of the night was paid for the Silver Deputy mare Silverdew who was bid up to $75,000 by David Hayden's Dark Hollow Farm. The mare, which sold in foal to Golden Missile and with a 2004 season to Red Bullet, is out of the stakes winning Grey Dawn II mare Dawnelo and is the dam of a yearling Running Stag colt. "She was my pick of the litter," Hayden said. "I thought she was the quality mare of the sale without question. She's in foal to Golden Missile and I like Red Bullet. She may not be bred back to Red Bullet but the season will be used for another mare."
