Randy Mills' turf stakes star Unite's Big Red has been retired after an unsuccessful attempt to bring him back to the races as a 9-year-old this summer. The venerable chestnut gelding will move to Mills' Breakaway Farm in Ocala, according to trainer Dave Vivian, Jr.

"I had him ready to run several times," said Vivian, "beginning with the Miami Mile Breeders' Cup (gr. III), but that was rained off the turf. We tried to get him going again several times but either the races didn't fill, or were forced off turf by rain. Finally, he injured a pastern training and it was decided to send him home."

A son of Unite, Unite's Big Red last raced when fourth in the Miami Mile on Sept. 2, 2002 behind Band Is Passing, who was retired this summer. Unite's Big Red was a leading turf stakes runner in south Florida throughout his career and goes home with a record of 44-12-5-3 for earnings of $828,858.

Trained through most of his career by Randy Mills, Unite's Big Red captured renewals of the Tropical Turf Handicap (gr. III) and Miami Mile Breeders' Cup Handicap at Calder, and Mac Diarmida Handicap (gr. III) and Pan American Handicap (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park.
