An overflow field of 14 turf runners has been entered for the one-mile, $150,000 Appleton Handicap (gr. IIT) at Gulfstream Park Saturday. The field includes two horses owned and bred by Arthur Appleton, for whom the race is named, Galic Boy and Broadway Snowman. Galic Boy drew into the field; Broadway Snowman will have to sweat it out on the also-eligible list.
Galic Boy earned his first graded stakes win in his most recent start, a 1 1/4-length victory over Where's Taylor in the one-mile Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap (gr. IIIT) in November. The 7-year-old son of Irish River has won 10 of 31 career starts for earnings of $368,439. Mickey A. Goldfine conditions Galic Boy.
Broadway Snowman also enters the Appleton off a victory, that coming in an Aqueduct allowance race in early November. Christophe Clement trains the 5-year-old son of Frosty the Snowman.
North East Bound enters the Appleton with graded stakes credentials and a six-race losing streak. The 6-year-old gelded son of D'Accord last won in April, taking the Maker's Mark Mile (gr. IIT) by a neck over Brahms. His other graded stakes wins include the $400,000 Meadowlands Cup (gr. II) and the $250,000 Kent Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. IIIT). Pat Day will pilot the Willam Perry trainee.
