The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association announced today the appointment of John Phillips to the American Graded Stakes Committee in place of New York Racing Association chairman Barry Schwartz. Phillips will serve out the remaining two years of Schwartz's term.
With the management changes at NYRA and the appointment of committee chairman Steve Duncker as interim co-chief operating officer of NYRA, Schwartz believed it would be perceived the NYRA would have undue influence over the committee. To alleviate this perception, Schwartz resigned from the committee.
"TOBA and the committee greatly appreciate the time and effort Barry put into the committee and we will miss his contributions," said Steve Duncker, chairman of the American Graded Stakes Committee. "We welcome John to the committee and look forward to working with him."
The American Graded Stakes Committee will hold its annual grading session in Lexington November 24 and 25.
