At the Wire
While the fate of Derby contender Siphonic rests in the hands of his father, Dave, trainer Grant Hofmans has a budding 3-year-old of his own named Searcher. After losing his debut sprinting, the son of Marquetry got the job done on Feb. 9, taking a maiden race at a mile. The colt races for his breeders, Edmond and Sharon Hudon...A one-mile allowance race on Feb. 9 brought together the warriors of handicap days gone by, but it was Reba's Gold, a 5-year-old son of Slew o' Gold, who spoiled the party, scotching the returns of both Sky Jack and Futural. Trained by Dan Hendricks, Reba's Gold caught Sky Jack to score by a nose. He is owned by the Creston Farms of Alex Trebek, the familiar host of "Jeopardy." Sky Jack, last seen sensationally winning the 2000 Native Diver Handicap (gr. III) at Hollywood Park, looked solid in his return and should be a force in imminent stakes engagements. Futural, making his first start since last summer's Pacific Classic (gr. I), ended up third, beaten 5 1/2 lengths.
