Penny Chenery, owner of the legendary Secretariat, has released for auction a horse blanket worn by teh champion at his resounding 1973 victory in the Canadian International Championship at Woodbine. The Canadian International was the final race of Secretariat's career.

The blanket is available for bidding on the ebay internet site until the auction closes on Nov. 1 at 4:30 EST. As of Thursday afternoon, the blanket had drawn 21 bids, with the leading bidder standing at $13,855. Interested bidders can link to ebay directly or through www.secretariat.com.

Mrs. Chenery is attempting to raise awareness of Thoroughbred racing, and to raise seed money for the forthcoming Secretariat Foundation. The philanthropic vision of the Secretariat Foundation is multifaceted, emphasizing rescue, research and projects that will enrich the lives of the horses and people within the Thoroughbred industry in this generation, and those to come.

The blanket measures 80" x 80", and is made of white wool with red trim. The blanket's value is enhanced by the fact that it was taken off Secretariat at the track, and immediately put into protected storage. Still embedded in the blanket are spots of dirt from the race, as well as actual hairs and perspiration from the stunning chestnut colt.
