Koji Maeda's Saga Novel, a 3-year-old Boundary filly who went through the sales ring three times, posted her second grade III stake victory in Japan when she took Sunday's Crystal Cup (Jpn-III) at Nakayama Racecourse.
Saga Novel, produced from the Alydar mare Thunder maid, led an American-bred sweep of the six-furlong grass test as Eagle Sword (colt by Sword Dancer) was second and Café Bostonian (colt by Boston Harbor) third in the 16-horse field.
The final time for the race was 1:07.8 as Saga Novel remained undefeated in three career starts, with earnings of ¥78,290,000 (about US$611,641). Last year, she won the Fairy Stakes (jpn-III). Bred in Kentucky by Spectrum Bloodstock and Partners, Saga Novel was purchased by The Lads for $50,000 from the Ashford Stud consignment to the 1999 Keeneland November sale. Pinhooked by Drumkenny Farm into the 2000 Keeneland September yearling sale, Saga Novel was then purchased by Leprechaun Racing. Consigned by Leprechaun to last year's Keeneland April 2-year-olds in training sale, the filly was acquired by North Hills Management for $100,000.
