BC Winner Volponi Retired

Multi millionaire Volponi, last year's winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), but last in this year's renewel when it was sponsored by Dodge, has been retired from racing, but no decision has been reached as to where he will enter stud, according to Daily Racing Form. Trainer P.G. Johnson said a deal to sell the majority interest in the 5-year-old son of Cryptoclearance is in the closing stages, but did not reveal the identity of the purchaser. Volponi raced for Johnson and his family's Amherst Stable in partnership with Spruce Pond Stable Those two parties plan to retain an interest.

Bred by Amherst, Volponi won or placed in 24 of 31 starts and earned $3,187,232. His seven wins included scores in the Pegasus (gr. II) and Poker (gr. IIIT) Handicaps and the Pilgrim Stakes (gr. IIIT) in addition to the Classic. Volponi, who was produced from the Sir Harry Lewis mare Prom Knight, placed in 10 stakes, all of which were grade I or grade II.
