A field of nine fillies and mares will take the gate for Thursday's $100,000 Bewitch Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland. The Bewitch is the sister race to Wednesday's Elkhorn Stakes (gr. IIIT), for males. Both the Bewitch and Elkhorn cover 12 furlongs on the turf.
Leading the list of contenders is Sweetest Thing. The cleverly named daughter of Candy Stripes and Escape Reality was narrowly beaten by multiple stakes-winner Julie Jalouse in the Orchid Handicap (gr. IIT) at Gulfstream Park in her latest start. Mark Guidry has the mount.
Lady Upstage looks to be Sweetest Thing's main rival, having already won a 12-furlong race over the course at this meeting. Trainer Christophe Clement will give a leg up to Hall of Fame rider Jerry Bailey.
The Bewitch field from the rail out: Lapuma (Larry Melancon); Temis (Eddie Martin Jr.); Tweedside (John Velasquez); Peace Keeping (James Lopez); True Ruby (Jon Court); Sweetest Thing (Guidry); Sunstone (Jorge Chavez); Built to Last (Robby Albarado); and Lady Upstage (Bailey).
