Teleprompter, the English invader who won the 1985 Arlington Million (gr. IT) and was a group II winner in his native land, has been euthanized at age 23, according to the Racing Post. The Welsh Pageant gelding had resided at New England Stud near Newmarket following his retirement in 1987.Teleprompter's Arlington Million win proved significant in changing the rules barring geldings from group I races. The change took place several months after the victory. The Arlington Million, sponsored by Budweiser, attracted a field of 13, and it was Teleprompter going to the lead and holding off a rush by Greinton to score by three-quarters of length. Teleprompter raced three other times in North America, finishing unplaced in the Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT), Washington, D.C., International (gr. IT), and the 1986 Arlington Million. In England, he won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Eng-II), and was a group winner in Ireland and France.Bred by the 18th Lord Derby in the name Stanley Estate Stud, Teleprompter retired because of back problems with a record of 11 wins from 36 starts and earnings of $966,583 for Lord Derby and trainer Bill Watts. He was produced from the Silly Season mare Ouija.
