Fortunate Moment, winner of the 1987 American Derby (gr. I) at Arlington Park and that year's Illinois Horse of the Year, was euthanized June 7 at Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine near Stillwater because of laminitis. The 18-year-old stallion had been donated last year to the college by his breeder, Jerry Pinkley. All six of the mares he covered in 2002 were pronounced in foal.
Fortunate Moment (For The Moment--Restless Cat, by Restless Wind) won two other Arlington stakes and the Stroh's Prelude Stakes at Louisiana Downs the year he was Horse of the Year. He raced two more years and was retired with 10 wins from 34 starts and earnings of $385,102.
Fortunate Moment didn't stand for several years before being sent to the college. Prior to that hiatus, he stood at Horizon Farms in Illinois. He is the sire of one stakes winner, Project Bullet.
