A field of eight runners was finalized today for the 82nd running of the Carlton Draught Cox Plate (Aus-I) to be run October 24. First race post time is scheduled for 9:10 p.m. EDT on Breeders' Cup eve, post time for the Cox Plate is set for 1:00 a.m. EDT.
Odds-on favorite Lonhro has drawn post seven of eight. The field for the $3 million group I event was shortened by late injuries to a few of the international runners that were slated to go. It also lost last year's winner, Northerly, to a career ending injury sustained earlier this season. He would have been vying for his third win in three years. This year's lone international invader is the 4-year-old filly Paraca.
Paraca, who was bred in Argentina, was sold to South African interests as a yearling. She then proved herself a champion of her sex in that country, winning six of nine starts there.
The filly is now in the care of trainer Andrew Balding.
