author Laura Hillenbrand has been named the 2003 recipient of the Allaire C. du Pont Humanitarian Award from Thoroughbred Charities of America and writer Bill Nack will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Magazine Writing.
The awards will be presented at The Thoroughbred Charities Auction & Dinner Gala Dec. 6. Nack will be on hand to speak to the audience.
The Allaire C. du Pont Award honors exceptional contributions in the racing industry. Hillenbrand's book, Seabiscuit, An American Legend
, has been a New York Times
bestseller in hardcover and paperback and was made into a motion picture this summer.
Nack was a mainstay on the horseracing beat for Sports Illustrated, winning six Eclipse Awards. Nack began his career at Newsday on Long Island and moved to Sports Illustrated, where he covered thoroughbred racing for 23 years. While Nack recently retired from Sports Illustrated, he continues to contribute to the magazine as well as GQ, the Blood-Horse
, and other publications.
After last year's gala, Thoroughbred Charities distributed more than $1.1 million in grants to 75 groups in the equine industry that support equine rescue, retirement and research as well as education grants and other aid to people who work with racehorses.
