Gulfstream Hires New Racing Secretary

Magna Entertainment Corp. is preparing to announce the appointment of David Bailey as racing secretary at Gulfstream Park.

Bailey had been the assistant to Gulfstream racing secretary Bob Umphrey, who resigned last month to work exclusively for Churchill Downs Inc., specifically its South Florida property Calder Race Course. Umphrey had served in the position at Gulfstream since 1993.

Bailey also has ties with Churchill corporate; he has been the racing secretary at Arlington Park since 1997, a position he hopes to continue even as he accepts the top spot in Gulfstream's racing office. "I think I can persuade them that one doesn't interfere with the other," he said.

Although no announcement has been made, Bailey has been at his desk at Gulfstream this week carding races for the upcoming meet to begin Jan. 3, 2001. And the horsemen were pleased that he was.

"This is excellent news for the Gulfstream racing community," trainer Peter Walder said. "Dave has been great for Arlington, and he'll be great here, too."

Bailey, 47, has been employed in Gulfstream's racing office since 1983. The native of Massachusetts has served as a racing official at Belmont, Keeneland, Meadowlands, and Saratoga.
