As Churchill Downs prepares to close out its 2002 Spring Meet on July 7, several top juveniles were on the track preparing for weekend stakes events. The Louisville track will host the Debutante Stakes (gr. III) on Saturday and Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III) on Sunday.
Posse, winner of the Kentucky Breeders' Cup (gr. III) and the likely Bashford Manor favorite breezed four furlongs in :49.60. Donnie Meche was aboard the son of Silver Deputy for trainer Steve Asmussen. Overbrook Farm homebred Boston Park, a two-time winner in the Spring Meet for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, breezed four furlongs in :48.40.
Others expected to run in the six furlong Bashford Manor include Cooper Crossing, Lone Star Boy, White Cat and Wild Bid. The list of possibles includes Air Lordan and Clayton's Trick.Debutante Fillies Work
On the juvenile filly side, D'Nile breezed three furlongs in :35.80 for trainer Ken McPeek. The Capote filly figures to be among the favorites for the 5 1/2-furlong Debutante after she set a track record of five furlongs in a June 23 maiden victory at Churchill Downs.
The Debutante is expected to draw a field that includes Blues In Seattle, Vibs, Awesome Humor, Attemptress and Bridget Says. Listed as possible for the Debutante is Watch Out Boys.
Three Chimneys Juvenile winner Holiday Runner, unbeaten in three races for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, was scheduled to run in the Debutante but will miss the race after suffering a recent fever.
