The Meadowlands and Monmouth Park, the racing properties of the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority, have applied for 141 Thoroughbred dates for the 2004 racing season. The request represents a substantial increase over the 120 Thoroughbred racing dates offered by the sports authority this year. The proposed dates were submitted to the New Jersey Racing Commission, which will meet on Nov. 5 at its Trenton offices to consider the matter. Thoroughbred racing at Monmouth Park would open Memorial Day weekend (May 29-31) and settle into a Wednesday through Sunday afternoon schedule in June through closing day, Sept. 5, for a total of 72 days. Then the Thoroughbred scene shifts to the Meadowlands for 69 dates from Sept. 6 through Dec. 11. The schedule calls for racing on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday through Saturday evenings.
