Longshot Textbook Method rolled to an easy victory Friday in the $75,000 Yaddo Handicap, which was run off the soggy Saratoga turf.
The 4-year-old daughter of Mr. Greeley, out of One for Fun (by One for All), jumped to the lead quickly in the 1 1/8-mile race and held it down the backstretch. She was passed briefly going into the final turn by the favorite Shopping for Love, but quickly regained the lead along the rail.
When asked by jockey Jose Santos, the filly pulled easily away and cross the wire four and a half lengths ahead of Indy Mood for Luv, who launched her challenge at the top of the stretch. Shopping for Love was third. The final time was 1:51.42.
Textbook Method paid $28.40, $11.60, and $4.90. Indy Mood for Luv paid $6.20 and $3.50. Shopping for Love paid $2.70.
The Yaddo was the second consecutive victory for Textbook Method who came into the race off a win in a $35,000 allowance race at Monmouth Park. The filly is trained by Rene Araya and owned by Paul P. Pompa Jr. She was bred in New York by Frank Albanese and Anne Bivona.
Textbook Method was bought at the Ocala Breeders' Sales April 2-year-old in training sale for $82,000. She has now won six races in 14 lifetime starts and has career earnings of $231,200.
Textbook was not how the start of the race could be described. Indy Mood for Luv acted up and sprung her starting gate. Shopping for Love responded to the chaos by unseating jockey Jerry Bailey. Both horses were taken out of the starting gate. Indy Mood for Luv was inspected by the track veterinarian, then both horses were reloaded a few minutes after the incident.
