Sam-Son Farms' Canadian homebred Soaring Free breezed five furlongs over Keeneland's main track Friday morning in preparation for his engagement in the NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT).
The 4-year-old gelded by Smart Strike took a good run at the pole under regular exercise rider Hugh Chapman and cruised the first three-eighths in :35 1/5. Clocker Tom Bridges caught him in :47 2/5 for the half and :59 3/5 at the wire. The Mark Frostad trainee galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.
Soaring Free, out of the Danzig mare Dancing With Wings, has won five of seven starts this year, all under Todd Kabel. His victories include three stakes: the Neartic Stakes (Can-IIT), Ontario Jockey Club Stakes, and the Play King Handicap (Can-IIIT), all at Woodbine. Second to Touch of the Blues in the Atto Mile (gr. IT) two races back, he finished fourth, beaten 2 1/2-lengths by Perfect Soul, in the Shadwell Turf Mile (gr. IT) at Keeneland, his final start before the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.
