Storm Flag Flying was made the overwhelming 1-9 favorite Friday, the first day of Breeders' Cup Future Bet for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. On the male side, the $1 million Juvenile favorite is Vindication, heavily supported as well at 7-5.
The daughter of Storm Cat out of My Flag was monstrously impressive in winning the Sept. 15 Belmont Matron (gr. I) by 12 3/4 lengths for trainer Shug McGaughey, stamping herself as potentially the heaviest favorite on World Thoroughbred Championship day at Arlington Park Oct. 26.
There are no other horses attracting much support in the filly division. Santa Catarina is the 22-1 second choice, while Awesome Humor is 30-1. Fourteen of the 24 betting interests are off the board at higher than 99-1.The field, the morning line favorite at 6-1, is listed at 60-1.
Vindication, trained by Bob Baffert, easily won the Kentucky Cup Juvenile (gr. III) at Turfway Park Sept. 14 with a long sustained rally, to earn favorite status. Sky Mesa attracted attention at 7-1, while Belmont Futurity (gr. I) winner Whywhywhy is 9-1. Icecoldbeeratreds, winner of the Del Mar Futurity (gr. II) is 10-1, while Elusive City is 14-1. The field, the morning line favorite at 5-1, is currently 30-1.
A total of $23,536 was wagered in the first day of the final Breeders' Cup pool. About two-thirds of it went to the fillies' race ($15,951).
