Millionaire Bourbon Belle has been retired from racing following surgery at Hagyard-Davidson-McGee Associates near Lexington. The 5-year-old mare underwent surgery on Nov. 9 to relieve pain from an intestinal infection. She had been scheduled to run the following day in the feature race at Churchill Downs.
Bourbon Belle raced 40 times in four years of racing, winning 13 stakes at eight different tracks. In four starts at Saratoga, she was never worse than third. She captured the 1999 Honorable Miss Handicap (gr. III) and came back to win a division of that race this year. She placed twice in the Ballerina Handicap (gr. I) at the Spa, once finishing a nose behind Furlough.
In her home state of Kentucky, Bourbon Belle (Storm Boot -- Timeless Girl, by Whitesburg) won the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland, three consecutive runnings of the Weekend Delight Stakes at Turfway Park, and the Abrogate Handicap at Churchill. She was retired with 16 wins and earnings of $1,152,223.
Bourbon Belle remains at the clinic. According to part owner Susan Bunning, Bourbon Belle has been booked to grade I winner Coronado's Quest.
