Janeian Sets Hawthorne Mark in Indian Maid

New Zealand-bred Janeian set a 1 1/16-mile course record while winning the $120,000 Indian Maid Breeders' Cup Handicap for fillies and mares at Hawthorne Saturday.

Swinging to the outside under jockey Eddie Martin Jr., Janeian took over in mid-stretch and drew off to a 2 1/4-length victory in course record time of 1:39.86. Delmonico Cat slipped between horses to finish second while Delicatessa was another length back in third.

The 5-year-old mare Janeian settled in behind the pace set by Curious Conundrum as she carved our early fractions of :22 4/5, :46 3/5 and 1:09 4/5. With Glorious Grace moving on the outside of Curious Conundrum to contest the lead, Janeian and Martin sat poised in third and waited for the field to straighten out in the lane.

Owned by Greg England and trained by Bret Calhoun, Janeian returned $9.40, $5.00, and $3.20. Delmonico Cat returned $4.40 and $2.80 while Delicatessa came back $4.80.

Eddie Martin Jr. was impressed with Janeian's effort, "She's a nice horse. I've been aboard for her last three races and was supposed to be in her fourth race back but I had to go out of town. She's a lot of horse. She's the nuts."

Jockey Curt Bourque rode Delmonico Cat to her strong second-place finish and was happy with his filly's performance, "When I asked her she gave all that she had but we just couldn't get to the winner. She handles the grass well. When I pushed on her she was running but that mare on the front end was confident. She ran her heart out but when you finish second in a track-record performance you can't complain."

Janeian earned $60,000 for her victory, boosting her career earnings to $190,294.
