Love Sting, ridden by Gary Bain, posted a big upset with a 1 ¾-length victory in Saturday's $200,000 Calder Oaks on the Festival of the Sun program at the Miami racetrack.
The Jennifer Hayford-trained daughter of Lit de Justice took command on the far turn and was on cruise control from there, stopping the Teletimer in 1:48 3/5 for the 1 1/8 mile over a turf course rated firm. Sent off at odds of more than 19-1, Love Sting rewarded her backers with $39, $16 and $6.40.
Bain, a rider since 1969, was doused by water by the other jockeys in congratulations afterward. Bain had trouble recalling the last major stakes he had won.
"I've won on (Love Sting) a couple of times and I never even really asked her to run," he said. "I didn't know just how good she was. Now I think she's the best 3-year-old filly at this track, nobody here can beat her. I know she has a lot of speed, all I had to do was slow her down and save her for the finish."
The Calder Oaks was the first stakes score for the bay filly, who earned $120,000 to send her bankroll soaring to $169,010 for her owner Emerald Pastures Corp., Inc. The Oaks was the third straight tally over the Calder turf for Love Sting, who is three for six over the surface. Her career record now stands at four wins and three seconds in 13 trips to the post.
"I'm probably the happiest person after the race, but definitely not the most surprised," Hayford said. "I felt very good going into the race about her chances."
A New England jockey for a number of years, Hayford gained her trainer's license in 1991 before turning to full time coniditioning in 1999.
Miss Tassy, under apprentice rider Eddie Castro, made a belated rally to finish second in the field of 11 sophomore distaffers. She paid $12.20 and $5.20. Formal Miss, the 6-5 post time favorite with M. R. Cruz in the irons, was third and paid $2.40.
