Patrick Mahony has been named the vice president of mutuels for the New York Racing Association, NYRA president and COO Terry Meyocks announced Nov. 21.
Mahony brings 36 years and a family tradition of pari-mutuel expertise to his new position
He began his career in the industry in 1966 in New Jersey, working at Monmouth, Garden State and Atlantic City Race Course. The bulk of his career though has been spent in South Florida, where he headed the mutuel departments at three major tracks – Calder, Hialeah and Gulfstream.
He joined the staff at Hialeah in 1967 and succeeded his father, Riggs, as director of mutuels there in 1974. He served in that position until 1989. He has worked at Gulfstream since 1969 and has been director of mutuels there since 1983. The vice president of mutuels at Calder, Mahony began his stint there in 1979.
The 56-year-old Mahony, a native of Miami, graduated from the University of Miami in 1968.
NYRA's current director of mutuels, Vince Hogan, will be retiring shortly due to health concerns. Mahony will report to Jim Gallagher, who will assume additional responsibilities as vice president of regulatory compliance.
Mahony is expected to begin his duties at NYRA shortly after the first of the year.
