A talented field of 2-year-olds, headed by D's Bertando and Buddy Gil, is shaping up for Saturday's $75,000-added Gold Rush Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.
The Gold Rush, contested at one mile, is a steppingstone to the $100,000 Golden Gate Derby (gr. III) Jan. 11. The Golden Gate Derby, a 1 1/16-miles event, will be the West Coast's first major race for 3-year-olds hoping to make a run at the Triple Crown events.
The Gold Rush will mark the stakes debut of D's Bertrando, who drew off in the stretch to win a six-furlong maiden allowance contest by 13 lengths in 1:08.49 on Nov. 9 at Golden Gate Fields. The impressive victory earned D's Bertrando a lofty Beyer Speed Figure of 105, the highest mark this year by a 2-year-old.
D's Bertrando, a California-bred colt by Bertrando, has a win and a second in two career races. He is trained by Jeff Bonde and owned by JMJ Racing Stable.
Buddy Gil is coming off a 7 1/2-length victory in the $65,600 Golden Bear Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on Nov. 24. Buddy Gil broke his maiden in a one-mile race at Bay Meadows on Oct. 17 and then shortened up to six furlongs in the Golden Bear, which he won in 1:10.64.
Veteran trainer Chuck Jenda trains Buddy Gil, a gelded son of Eastern Echo.

Krone, a Hall of Famer who has 3,555 career victories, returned to riding Nov. 1 after a 3 1/2-year retirement. Krone will ride Spensive for trainer Bob Baffert. Spensive most recently finished fourth in the Sunny Slope Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 19.$75,000 Gold Rush Stakes, 2-year-olds, 1 mile
