Champion Xtra Heat has been immortalized as a bobblehead doll. The Maryland Jockey Club will distribute 4,000 Xtra Heat bobbleheads to paying customers attending the February 17th racing program, a card featuring the General George Handicap (gr. II).
Xtra Heat has won 25 of 34 career starts with earnings of $2.25 million. The daughter of Dixieland Heat earned the Eclipse Award as top three-year old filly in 2001, winning nine of 13 starts, including four graded races and was in the money all 13 times.
She gained the national spotlight with two superb efforts against the boys: a gallant second in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) and a gutsy third in the Frank J. De Francis Dash (gr. I).
Xtra Heat won seven of 11 races in 2002, and is a finalist for next champion sprinter honors at the Jan. 27 Eclipse Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Trainer John Salzman is pointing Xtra Heat toward a defense of her 2002 victory in the $200,000 Barbara Fritchie Handicap (gr. II), on Feb. 15.
