Record Margin for Devil Time's Ohio Romp

Devil Time claimed the distinction as the best horse in Ohio Saturday with the largest winning margin ever in the 17-year history of the $100,000 Best of Ohio Endurance Championship at Beulah Park in Grove City.

The 8-year-old Ohio-bred gelding, owned by Upper Arlington businessman Brad Anderson, turned the mile and a quarter event into a "no contest "as he drew away from the field 12 in the stretch to win by 16 1/2 widening lengths in 2:03:18 on a fast track.

"When he went around the first turn, I thought he was too far behind," said Anderson. "You never know when a horse is going to thrown in a clunker, but boy, it all changed when he kicked into gear around the far turn."

At the finish line, Devil Time was under a hand rider by jockey William Troilo. "The only problem I had was weaving in and out as the other horses were stopping," said Troilo. "He is such a strong horse and when you ask him to run, he runs."

Devil Time is undefeated in Ohio this year with five consecutive victories. His earnings of $60,000 Saturday push his lifetime total to $406,859. As the prohibitive odds-on favorite, Devil Time paid $3.20, 2.60 and 2.20. Second place finisher Scout Me returned 14.60 and 7.20 and Fax A Freddy paid 10.00 to show.

In the $60,000 Best of Ohio Juvenile Fillies championship, longshot Jessica survived a claim of foul in an upset of odds-on favorite Barnsey. Jessica, ridden by Russell Woolsey, took the lead away from Barnsey deep in the stretch and won by a length. The jockey on Barnsey, Julio Felix, claimed Jessica interfered as the two fillies approached the finish line.

Jessica ran the mile and sixteenth in 1:49:98 on a fast track for her first stakes victory. Overlooked at 9-1, Jessica paid $20.40, 6.00 and 3.80. Barnsey returned 3.40 and 2.40 and third place finisher Royal Cup paid 2.60 to show.

In an all-out effort, Floater remained undefeated with a length decision over 40-1shot Affirmlode and a field of 13 in the $60,000 Juvenile Colt championship. Jockey Michael Rowland guided Floater past five horses in the stretch to win his fourth consecutive race. The 2-year-old Ohio-bred colt ran the 1 1/16 mile in 1:50:33. As the 4-5 odds-on choice, Floater paid $3.80. 3.80 and 2.40. Affirmload returned 17.00 and 5.40 and Oh Oleg paid 3.60 for the show spot.

In the biggest upset in the five-race series, 31-1 Scioto Bootski won a photo finish by a short head over heavy odds-on favorite Ben's Reflection to capture the $50,000 Sprint championship. Wirebender finished a half length behind in third.

Scioto Bootski, a 5-year-old Ohio mare and the only female in the 11-horse field, ran the six furlongs in 1:11:16 under jockey Hector Rosario Jr. Scioto Bootski paid $66.60, 11.20, 2.10. Ben's Reflection returned 2.60 and 2.10 and Wirebender paid 2.10 to show.

In the $60,000 Distaff championship, Oh So Easy denied Ashwood C C her third straight Distaff Championship. Oh So Easy, a 3-year-old filly, ran down Ashwood C C in the final strides and won by a head in a photo finish. Whitewater Way came in third without threatening the top two finishers.

Under jockey Jeff Johnson, Oh So Easy ran the 1 1/8 mile in 1:54:47 for her third stakes victory of the year. Off at 10-1, Oh So Easy paid $22.80, 5.40, and 3.40. Ashwood C C returned 2.60 and 2.40 and Whitewater Way paid 5.40 to show.
