Douglas L. McSwain was named new general council for the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association. The unanimous selection was made by the National HBPA's board directors during it's Jan. 29 meeting. McSwain is a partner with the Lexington firm of Sturgill, Turner, Barker and Moloney...W. Cothran ("Cot") Campbell, author of "Rascals and Racehorses" and "Lightning in a Jar," will hold a book signing at Gulfsteam Park in Miami, Florida, on Saturday, Feb. 15. Signing time is to be announced. "Rascals and Racehorses" and "Lightning in a Jar" were both published by the Eclipse Press division of Blood-Horse Publications Inc.... Edward Hotaling has donated seven newspapers from August of 1864 and August of 1863 to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Hotaling, author of The Great Black Jockeys and They're Off! Horse Racing at Saratoga, instituted the Edward Hotaling Collection late in 1999. The newly-donated editions of the New York Daily Tribune, and Times from August 8, 1864 and August 3-7, 1863 include stories on opening day at Saratoga race course and the first thoroughbred meeting, in 1863. Other articles cover Civil War reports from both General Lee's and General Sherman's camps, the reports from Vicksburg, and a poem to Colonel Robert Gould Shaw of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. Hotaling is working on a book about jockey Jimmy Winkfield, scheduled to be published by McGraw-Hill, later this year. The Edward Hotaling Collection comprises early newspapers, prints, photographs, and extensive research files. Along with over one hundred other archival collections, it is available to researchers in the museum's John A. Morris Library.
