Reraise, with Corey Nakatani in the stirrups (center with red jersey) drives from the final turn ahead of the pack for the win in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998.
In his first race since May of 1999, 1998 Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Reraise led at every call to win an allowance race by 1 1/2 lengths Sunday at Hollywood Park. Under Corey Nakatani, the 5-year-old gelded son of Danzatore completed the six furlongs in 1:09.63.
Reraise dueled with 1998 San Rafael Stakes (gr. II) winner Orville N Wilbur's through an opening quarter-mile run in :22.04, opened a 1 1/2-length lead after a half-mile in :44.85, and held 10-1 longshot The Morris Monroe and Son of a Pistol at bay through the stretch to earn the win. The Morris Monroe finished second, a nose in front of Son of a Pistol. Orville N Wilbur's came home last in the four-horse field.
"He's back all right," said Nakatani. "I was glad to see him break sharp and put himself right back into the race. I was able to get a little breather at the three-eighths pole. I got to sit a little bit. Then turning for home, I asked him to kick on, and he did."
Trained by Craig Dollase, Reraise returned $2.60 and $2.40 as the 3-10 favorite and earned $31,200 for the win. The Morris Monroe paid $3.40 to place and completed a $1 exacta worth $5.20. Due to the short field, there was no show wagering.
Reraise has now won eight of nine career races and finished second in his lone defeat. He was bred in Kentucky by Sergent Willard.
"It's the first time he's felt the stick, though," said Dollase. "Corey (Nakatani) tapped him a few times. He had never felt the stick before. He had a right to get a little bit tired."
Dollase said the six-furlong Vernon O. Underwood Stakes (gr. III) at Hollywood Park Dec. 10 is the "logical spot" for Reraise's next race. (Chart, Equibase
