(from Santa Anita notes)
Defending Goodwood Handicap (gr. II) champion Pleasantly Perfect, who hasn't raced since March 1 when he was fourth in the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I), "is coming up to Saturday's Goodwood very good and I expect him to run as good as he can run," trainer Richard Mandella said Wednesday at Santa Anita.

Mandella admitted his primary goal is the Breeders' Cup Classic, but added, "We've got to do well in the Goodwood or we're not going to bother with the other (Classic). We're not going in (to the Goodwood) fooling around. We're trying to be serious and I think he'll run good."

In other developments in the $500,000 Goodwood, trainer Dan Hendricks called an audible in not running Reba's Gold in the Ralph M. Hinds Memorial Invitational Handicap at Fairplex Park on Sunday, opting to go straight to the Goodwood.

"I thought about the horse's career, what he's done and where he's going," Hendricks said of the 6-year-old owned by the Creston Farms of Jeopardy host Alex Trebek. "It was more important to run in the Goodwood. He won the Pomona race last year and he's won a graded stake (the Grade III Seabiscuit Handicap at Bay Meadows). I had more to lose than to gain at Fairplex."

Trainer Darrell Vienna said Joey Franco will run in the Goodwood rather than the $200,000 Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. I) at six furlongs on Sunday. "(Owner Jerry Frankel) made the final decision," Vienna said. "That's fine with me."

Toccet, the lone 3-year-old in Saturday's $500,000 Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap (Gr. II) at 1 1/8 miles, blew out four furlongs in the fog Saturday morning in his final major drill for the race.

"It didn't make the work tab because it was foggy," trainer John Scanlan said at his barn Wednesday morning. "The time looked to me (to be) about :48. I only got to see the last quarter and he did it well. Toccet is ready."

Toccet was supplemented at a cost of $10,000 to the Goodwood, as was Star Crossed by trainer Vienna.

Probable for the Goodwood: Fleetstreet Dancer, Tyler Baze, 113; Grey Memo, Gary Stevens, 116; Joey Franco, Victor Espinoza, 117; Pleasantly Perfect, Alex Solis, 116; Reba's Gold, Mike Smith, 115; Star Crossed, no rider, 110; Taste of Paradise, Jose Valdivia Jr., 113; and Toccet, Julie Krone, 113.
