Zillah the Hun tracked early leader I'madrifter into the stretch, inherited the lead inside the final furlong as that rival veered in at the sixteenth-pole and fell after hitting the inside rail, and held off the late charge of Jumron Won to win the $97,500 California Juvenile Stakes (gr. III) by 1 1/2 lengths Saturday at Bay Meadows. Under Corey Nakatani, Zillah the Hun completed the one-mile in 1:36.36 on a fast track to remain undefeated after three starts.
Jumron Won finished 2 1/2 lengths ahead of third-place Legendary Weave and Mob Ties was fourth. Both I'madrifter and One Troy Ounce, who was eased but walked off, did not finish.
John Paul Reddam's Zillah the Hun earned $55,000 for his second career stakes win. Prior to the California Juvenile Stakes, Zillah the Hun (Hawk Attack--Cope's Light, by Copelan) won the restricted Pinjara Stakes by a nose. Zillah the Hun is trained by Craig Dollase and was bred in Kentucky by Brereton C. Jones.
The 8-5 favorite, Zillah the Hun returned $5.20, $2.80 and $2.20. Second choice Jumron Won paid $2.80 and $2.20 and completed a $1 exacta worth $5.90. Legendary Weave, the third wagering choice, paid $2.20 to show. (Chart,
