Godolphin Racing's Mamool continued his domination in Germany Sunday, winning the Preis Von Europa (Ger-I) at Cologne, his second group I success in three weeks there.
The 4-year-old In The Wings colt, with Frankie Dettori aboard, took up the running after only 3/16 of a mile and after being headed by Well Made midway through the 1 1/2-mile event, re-established control in the final quarter mile. Mamool finished 1 1/4 length ahead of the filly Abanova, who edged Well Made by a shoulder. King of Boxmeer was fourth in the six-horse field. The final time on soft going was 2:35.2.
Winner of the Grosser Preis von Baden (Ger-I) at Baden Baden Sept. 6, Mamool is being pointed to the Tooheys New Melbourne Cup (Aus-I) in November by trainer Saeed bin Suroor.
Mamool shifted to the outside at the midway point, allowing Well Made and Boxmeer to move through at the rail. Well Made appeared to have the advantage when the field merged turning for home until Mamool and Dettori kicked for home.
After regaining the lead, Mamool won while ridden out to win comfortably. Albanova edged ahead of Well Made in the straight and held on for second.
