Seven years ago, London-born but Louisville-based trainer Patrick Byrne campaigned a pair of 2-year-olds, one male and one female, who eventually garnered Eclipse Awards in their respective divisions.
Favorite Trick, Byrne's juvenile colt, was also named 1997 Horse of the Year based largely on his victory the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), while Countess Diana assured her own championship when she captured the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) that year.
Byrne has another pair of promising juveniles who he plans to bring to Arlington Park for Saturday's closing day of the 2003 season.
Richard Nip's Everyday Angel will compete in Saturday's grade III Arlington-Washington Lassie, Chicago's main event for juvenile fillies, and R. Durham Racing Stable's Night Charger is slated to go to the post in Saturday's grade III Arlington-Washington Futurity, open to 2-year-olds of both sexes. Byrne is the only conditioner that will start youngsters in both of Arlington's twin 2-year-old fixtures.
Everyday Angel closed out at 8.80-1 in last weekend's Future Wager for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies based on her 12 1/2-length score in the maiden ranks at Saratoga Aug. 11.
Night Charger broke his maiden by three lengths in the only start of his career Aug. 23 at Ellis Park.
Others slated for Saturday's Lassie include Richard H. Glander's Anapest, who breezed three furlongs in :35 4/5 Wednesday morning at Arlington, and Darley's Zosima, who breezed four furlongs in company in :48 3/5 Tuesday at Arlington.
Others in the Lassie are Ashby Thoroughbreds' Bad Kitty, Richey & Strode Stables' Blondz Away, Robert H. Shepard's Cryptos' Best, Russell L. Reineman's Indian Jewel, Justin & Stefanie Carroll's Journey Fever, Richard Otto Stables' Lovely Afternoon, Roman Boruta's Rebel Lil, and Ten Broeck Farm's Sala de Oro.
Saturday's local Futurity is headed by Dream Walkin Farm's Cactus Ridge, who closed at 7.10-1 in last weekend's Future Wager for the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
Others, in addition to Byrne's bay colt, that are expected for the Futurity are Janelle Grum's Glittergem, Heiligbrodt Racing Stable's Korbyn Gold, L.W.Z. Stable's Orphan Brigade, and Stonerside Stable's Texas Deputy.
