The National Racing Compact, which has its office at Colonial Downs, has returned to operation after being shut down for six days by Hurricane Isabel. The date for restoration of power in the area is expected to be sometime this week, but the Compact has temporarily restored its operation by using alternate locations.
As of Wednesday morning, staff was operating the toll-free telephone number (1-877-457-2538) from a remote location and National License holders and new applicants were receiving regular service. However, some features, such as the fax number, may not be operational. Updates will be posted on the website, www.racinglicense.com.
During this period, licensees are urged to give the Compact office as much advance notice as possible when requesting service.
"Our employees have gone to great lengths to get the program back 'live', and we appreciate the patience our licensees and member commissions have shown. Racing goes on--even here at Colonial Downs--and we want to assure National Licensees and new applicants that they will continue to be taken care of by the Compact staff," said Robin Williams, chairman of the Compact.
"We had prepared for a disruption of service for two or three days, but we didn't imagine it might be weeks before our office would have power again. The downside of being an electronic operation is that we are heavily dependent on power; the upside is that we are fairly portable."
