Long Island Handicap Draws Full Field

The $150,000 Long Island Handicap (gr. IIT), the final turf stakes of the year in New York for fillies and mares, drew an overflow field of 14 with two also eligibles entered for Saturday's Aqueduct feature. Of the 16 entered for the 1 1/2-mile race, Hall of Fame trainer Philip Johnson trains three, and Bill Mott and Christophe Clement two each.

Johnson will saddle Fickle Friends and La Ville Rouge on Saturday, and will have to wait and see if his Offtheturf draws in from the also eligible list. Fickle Friends and La Ville Rouge were both recently entered in the Athenia Handicap (gr. IIIT), in which Fickle Friends finished second, but La Ville Rouge broke in the air and dumped jockey Mike Luzzi just out of the gate. Luzzi has the return call on La Ville Rouge on Saturday. Should Offtheturf draw in, she will race as a coupled entry with fellow Amherst Stable runner Fickle Friends.

"The mile and a half will be the question mark for everyone in my group," Johnson said. "I haven't run Fickle Friends as much as I would have liked this year and La Ville Rouge will retire after this start or one more."

Mott's two entrants, Flawly and Chine, will race as a coupled entry with the Harro Remmert-trained Moonlady. Clement's Innuendo and Lisieux Rose will race as separate betting interests. Playact will be saddled by Clement's brother, Nicolas Clement.
