Millionaire Chester House, a half-brother to 2003 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Empire Maker and one of five stakes winners from his dam, was euthanized June 28 at Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms near Lexington. Eight-year-old Chester House was standing his third season.Chester House began to shows signs of anemia in May and subsequently developed pneumonia. A diagnostic bone marrow biopsy was performed that revealed a form of cancer which was termed "Myelodysplastic Syndrome." A treatment of chemotherapy was initiated, but Chester House's condition deteriorated rapidly in the third week in June and in the end he lost the use of 80% of his lungs. Due to the extreme stress and in the opinion of experts from both Hagyard-Davidson-McGee veterinary clinic near Lexington and equine hospitals that his condition was terminal, it was decided to euthanize him.Juddmonte advertised Chester Horse as "a genetic masterpiece" to entice breeders once he entered stud and that type of billing wasn't stretching the truth one bit. He was by Mr. Prospector and his dam, Toussaud (by champion El Gran Senor), was a U.S. grade I-winning granddaughter of Northern Dancer. It was prime case of the popular Mr. Prospector on Northern Dancer cross in a potent form.Chester House also had plenty of race record to go with his masterpiece pedigree. He won the Arlington Million (gr. IT), won or placed in 10 other stakes in Europe and the U.S., and earned a career total of $1,944,545. Twice he finished third in the Juddmonte International (Eng-I).Chester House's pedigree has improved immeasurably since he entered stud in 2001. Toussaud, a Juddmonte homebred, was named 2002 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year and has accounted for several other graded stakes winners, the most accomplished being Empire Maker. Chester House also is a half-brother to grade I winners Honest Lady and Chiselling and to grade II winner Decarchy. Chester House was Toussaud's first foal.Chester House, who stood this season for $20,000, covered 123 mares this year and 112 have been pronounced in foal. Chester House was buried at Juddmonte.
