Dan Borislow's Toccet tuned up for the Oct. 4 Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) Saturday, working 6 furlongs at Santa Anita in 1:13. Julie Krone has been named to ride son of Awesome Again in the Goodwood.
Toccet went strong and steady throughout, going his first quarter in :24 2/5, then coming home his last half-mile in :48 3/5.
A winner of four graded stakes last year, including the grade I Champagne and Hollywood Futurity, Toccet returned off an eight-month layoff to win the restricted Widener Stakes at Philadelphia Park. He came right back 13 days later in the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. III) and appeared to flounder over the sloppy track, finishing fifth in a race that saw several of the leading contenders finish up the track.
Borislow and trainer John Scanlan are looking to use the Goodwood as a steppingstone to the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I).
Also pointing for the Goodwood are last year's winner Pleasantly Perfect, Grey Memo, and Southern Image, and possibly Reba's Gold and Fleet Street Dancer. There also is an outside chance Bob Baffert may run Congaree if he feels the son of Arazi needs a race before the Classic. Baffert said it is unlikely Congaree will run, but he will not make a decision until the week of the race.
