A half-interest in graded stakes-winning 2-year-old Cuvee has been purchased by a partnership that includes Bruce Kline and partners' Spendthrift Farm. The Lexington nursery acquired the interest from Winchell Thoroughbreds following the colt's arrival at Saratoga, where he is awaiting the Aug. 13 Saratoga Special Stakes (gr. II).
Bred by the late Verne H. Winchell, Cuvee has won or placed at Churchill Downs in all three of his starts. He began with a 6 1/4-length maiden score, then won the Kentucky Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III) by 8 1/4 lengths before finishing third in the Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III).
A son of Carson City, Cuvee is one of two foals of racing age from his dam, Christmas Star (by Star de Naskra), whose other offspring is stakes-placed. Christmas Star is a half-sister to millionaire Olympio, grade II winner Call Now, other stakes winner Your Call. and the dam of Spendthrift stallion Wild Wonder. Plans call for Cuvee to stand at stud at Spendthrift.
