Two years ago, the Seattle Slew colt Vindication brought $2.15 million at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale. He went on to win the 2002 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) and earn an Eclipse Award. This year, his half-brother by A.P. Indy (sired by Seattle Slew) is one of 212 horses catalogued for the Saratoga auction, which begins Tuesday night at 8 p.m. (EDT) in New York.
Produced from the grade III winner Strawberry Reason (by Strawberry Road), the colt is scheduled to go through the sale ring during Wednesday's second session. Like Vindication, he was bred by Payson Stud.
"He's maybe not quite as big as Vindication, but he's really good-looking," said Mark Taylor of consignor Taylor Made Sales Agency. "A.P. Indy doesn't typically sire a real superstar-looking horse, but this colt is way above average. He's probably a little more correct than what Vindication was. Vindication was relatively correct, and he brought over $2 million. This horse walking toward you is almost perfect."
Other horses to watch for in the Taylor Made consignment include a Storm Cat -- Broad Smile colt, Unbridled's Song colts out of Silken Cat and Stephanie's Road, a Foresty -- Dancin Renee colt, and Saint Ballado fillies out of Metromane (the dam of full brother Flame Thrower), Raging Apalachee (the dam of champion Artax), and President's Girl.
At Eaton Sales, one of the standouts is an A.P. Indy colt out of Lady Lochinva (by Lord at War), who is a full sister to grade I winner La Gueriere and a half-sister to grade I winner Al Mamoon (by Believe It). The colt was bred by Elizabeth Moran's Brushwood Stables.
"He is just extraordinary," Eaton's Reiley McDonald said. "He is as nice a physical horse as you'll ever see. He's got the size and length that normally comes with an A.P. Indy along with the huge hip and big shoulder of a sprinter. He is absolutely gorgeous. We thought he suited this market very well."
Others to watch in the Eaton consignment include an A.P. Indy -- Jewel in the Crown filly and a Forty Niner -- Super Dress colt.
The Saratoga sale runs through Thursday.
