Six horses are entered for Saturday's $500,000 Super Derby (gr. II), but it could end up being a two-horse race. The 4-5 favorite, Ten Most Wanted, and the 8-5 second choice, Soto, are the only two graded stakes winners in the field. They are also the only two non-Louisiana based horses that will be in the gate for Saturday's feature race at Louisiana Downs near Bossier City, La.Wally Dollase won the 1997 Super Derby (then a grade I) with Deputy Commander, the sire of Ten Most Wanted. His current charge won the Illinois Derby (gr. II) in April and captured the Travers Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga in his last start. He has seven top-three finishes in nine lifetime starts. Ten Most Wanted races for a partnership that includes J. Paul Reddam, Michael Jarvis, James Chisholm, and Kenneth Smole. Soto, who is trained by Michael Dickinson, is undefeated and is also a Derby winner. The son of Dehere won the Aug. 9 West Virginia Derby (gr. III) in his last out. Among his three wins last year was the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) at Churchill Downs. Soto is campaigned in the name Galopp LLC, which includes Baroness Karin von Ullman, her son Baron George von Ullman, and his wife, Carena, all residents of Germany.Soto is scheduled to depart from the Baltimore area BWI airport at 6 p.m. on Friday for Lousiana Downs. His travel plans are not expected to be affected by Hurricane Isabel, because at this point, it appears the storm will blow by his home base of Tapeta Farm near North East, Md., by tomorrow afternoon. The remaining competitors for Super Derby XXIV were the first four finishers in the Aug. 30 Prelude Stakes at Louisiana Downs. Kool Humor was the winner that day, followed by Zydeco Affair, Crowned King, and Taxicat. None of them has raced since the Prelude.
